A Gingerbread House Fit For A Nutcracker

Hi!  It's been a while, I know.  I won't lie, time in the kitchen has been at a bare minimum this festive season but I have managed to make a gingerbread house to share with you all.  I used the gingerbread recipe in Rachel Allen's 'Bake' book and while it tastes lovely its a proper cow to build a house with. Note to self; next year use the recipe from Gingerbread Architect!

This year's house has been made for my poor German Nutcracker, who unfortunately has lost his 'dangler' (I'm not so sure there is a worse indignity for a nutcracker to suffer than to loose his dangler!) which means he can no longer hang on the Christmas Tree with his brothers.  So I made him a house!

He has been very busy collecting firewood by cutting down some of the many Christmas trees that adorn his property.

And he has a lovely little holly wreath on his front door ... which does seem to be missing a door handle - oopsie!

I'm not sure what kind of houses other nutcrackers live in but my nutcracker has a Victorian inspired cottage. One side is in need of some repair, lest he will receive a dereliction notice from the council, but for the most part it is well kept with original features, including this lovely feature window.

It has actually been some nice therapy time putting together this years house, and for the most part I am pleased with how it has turned out ... next year though I hope to have a far more professional finish.  For this year though, I am happy in the thought that it is the imperfections that make it beautiful, for they certainly make it individual!

  19. Wow, what a beautiful gingerbread house. It must have taken ages to make and assemble all that - but so so worth it, it's amazing! I love the way you've made all the decorations around the house edible too!
